Mental Health First Aid Training-Youth: (MHFAT:Y) - 2 days

Outline

The 2 day course aims to provide information, tools and techniques to promote children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing, including giving Mental HealthFirst Aid. The focus is on supporting CYP aged 8 to 18 years. The Department of Health document, Future in Mind (March 2015) recommends that all schools should have in place a “specific individual responsible for mental health in schools.”

The five broad topic areas include:

  • What is mental health?
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Suicide and psychosis
  • Self harm and eating disorders
  • A model for giving Mental Health First Aid

Description

During our pilot stage, school staff from 118 CWAC Schools completed the training. Short and medium term evaluation was impressive. Immediately following training staff told us that:

  • They were more confident in their ability to support CYP who may have mental health difficulties (75%)
  • They were more knowledgeable in how to support CYP (100%)
  • The course was “good” or “very good”, with a “good balance of activities and information”.
Three to eight months after their initial training, of the 36 school based staff who responded to our anonymous survey:
  • 81% rated the course as helpful to them in supporting CYP
  • 92% reported feeling confident in their ability to support CYP who may have mental health problems. One attendee noted: “ I think the training has given me more confidence to speak openly to children who may be experiencing some very difficult situations in their lives”
  • 95% rated their knowledge and understanding of mental health difficulties as significantly higher than before their attendance at the course. One attendee noted: “It has given me a depth of understanding that I didn’t have- it’s made me look underneath the behaviours I see in children and be more reflectful”
  • 97% reported that the training manual had been useful to refer to after the training to inform their practice
  • Several attendees have briefed other staff in school. 100% stated that they would recommend Mental Health Training: Youth to colleagues from other schools.
