Providing high quality resources and advice to schools and academies
The Education Library Service (ELS) supports schools and academies by providing quality resources to enrich learning and promote reading for pleasure. The ELS lends books and many other materials including DVDs, story sacks and artefacts to subscribing schools. Borrowing these items is the most cost effective way to ensure all resources in school are up to date and attractive, since staff at ELS are specialists in sourcing and selecting the most appropriate materials.
Each school has an allocation for short term project loans to support the curriculum and also an allocation for long term loan books to support reading for pleasure. Short term project loans are issued to individual teachers and may be exchanged in person at our base in Winsford or via our delivery vans which visit each school regularly throughout the term. Requests for project resources may be made by telephone or via the online form on our website www.els.cheshire.gov.uk.
Long term loans of fiction and recreational reading books are issued to the school and these books may be kept in classrooms or the school library. Our mobile library visits each school annually to allow you to exchange up to 300 of these long term loan books for new or different titles. Refreshing collections in this way will maintain the children’s interest in reading.
We offer help and advice to schools on the organisation and management of their own resources and libraries. Every subscribing school is entitled to a free advisory visit from a qualified librarian who can advise on all aspects of school libraries, including assessing the book stock, advising on layout and organisation of the books, shelving, issue systems, ways to get pupils enthused about reading, and much more. We are also able to help you design a new library from scratch.
The ELS also runs courses on all aspects of running a school library at our base in Winsford. Subscribing schools receive a discount on the cost of these courses. Free user groups are held regularly to support schools using Junior Librarian library management software.
The ELS has a meeting room which can be booked for INSET training or planning. This may be combined with a tour of the service and the opportunity to borrow resources on the day.
Please note that Secondary Schools are currently unable to buy through the online system. If you wish to purchase or enquire about the service please contact the service directly who will be happy to provide you with more information.
